Melvin Potter and Iscah Njoku interview breakdown

Atlanta Police Department – Georgia

IA case 17-1-0549-DV 10.9.2017

The interviews of Officers Melvin Potter and Iscah Njoku reveal contrasting perspectives on their interactions and the incidents leading up to the investigation. Here’s a comparison of key elements from each account:

1. Incident at Potter’s Apartment

  • Potter’s Account: Potter describes Njoku as forcing her way into his apartment, despite his attempts to keep their interactions professional. He recounts a tense interaction where he physically guided her out by her wrists and later struggled to close the door as she attempted to re-enter. Potter claims that Njoku showed erratic behavior, pushing her way back in even after he escorted her outside. He notes minor injuries from the incident and recalls giving her a T-shirt after her shirt was ripped.
  • Njoku’s Account: Njoku recalls Potter grabbing and ripping her shirt, lifting her in a “bear hug,” and throwing her out. She describes herself as trying to re-enter to retrieve a shirt while covering herself. Njoku admits to following him into the apartment but denies forcing entry. She remembers Potter calling Officer Dely to help convince her to leave but says she initially refused, as she was there to discuss her pregnancy.

2. Physical Encounters and Injuries

  • Potter’s Account: Potter claims he only held Njoku’s wrists to escort her outside and then had to struggle to keep her from re-entering. He says he used minimal force and did not injure her beyond possible scratches or bruises.
  • Njoku’s Account: Njoku alleges that Potter was physically aggressive, forcefully throwing her out of his apartment. She mentions pushing him away and possibly scratching him during the struggle. Additionally, she describes subsequent encounters at her apartment where Potter allegedly lifted her chin, grabbed her by the shirt, and applied light pressure to her throat, which Potter denies.

3. Pregnancy and Relationship Tensions

  • Potter’s Account: Potter claims that he was unaware of Njoku’s pregnancy until informed by a mutual friend. He insists he was willing to discuss options but focused on a potential co-parenting relationship rather than rekindling romance. Potter portrays Njoku as frequently trying to reconnect romantically, which he rebuffed.
  • Njoku’s Account: Njoku explains that she went to Potter’s apartment intending to disclose her pregnancy but did not end up telling him due to the altercation. She later expressed frustration over his attempts to persuade her to get an abortion, even lying about getting one to gauge his reaction. After her miscarriage, she describes being emotionally distressed and hurt by Potter’s distancing behavior.

4. Subsequent Communications

  • Potter’s Account: After Njoku threatened to change her story to OPS, Potter claims he ceased contact, receiving messages and calls from her and unknown numbers. He provides screenshots showing what he describes as “emotionally unstable” behavior from Njoku.
  • Njoku’s Account: Njoku continued reaching out to Potter after telling him she’d had an abortion (a false claim), expressing anger when he ignored her messages. She eventually miscarried and stopped contacting him, expressing regret and frustration over the situation in the interview.

5. Final Reflections

  • Potter’s View: Potter frames the situation as a regrettable misunderstanding that spiraled due to Njoku’s erratic behavior. He expresses frustration at her perceived emotional instability and emphasizes his efforts to handle matters professionally, despite the awkwardness of filing a report against a fellow officer.
  • Njoku’s View: Njoku expresses remorse over the incident and the emotional toll it has taken, emphasizing her desire to move past the experience. She portrays herself as initially trying to protect Potter’s career but later feeling betrayed and hurt by his behavior.

Summary

Potter’s narrative depicts a defensive stance against an unwanted intrusion, highlighting his attempts to avoid escalating the situation. Njoku’s account describes Potter as more aggressive and controlling, particularly regarding her pregnancy. The inconsistencies between the accounts reflect different personal interpretations of the same events, with each officer portraying the other as the source of tension. This contrast underscores the complexity of their interactions and the emotional and professional challenges that ensued.
