In May 2024, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office found itself engulfed in a major scandal when Sheriff Chad Nichols was arrested on charges of sexual battery, public indecency, and violation of oath by a public officer. This shocking incident came to light after the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate Nichols following allegations of misconduct. The GBI swiftly launched an investigation, leading to Nichols turning himself in and being booked into the Rabun County Detention Center (Georgia Bureau of Investigation)(AccessWDUN).
Sheriff Nichols, a prominent figure in the community known for advocating transparency in law enforcement, had previously implemented body cameras and in-car video systems in the department (The Georgia Sun).
