The Arrest and Investigation of Jailer Brittanie Pooler
On the afternoon of March 16, 2022, an internal investigation took place at the College Park Police Department regarding an incident involving Jailer Brittanie Kiara Pooler. The inquiry was conducted by Captains Nicholas Duffey and Boyd Burns in the department’s administrative conference room. The subject of the investigation was a June 11, 2021, shoplifting citation issued to Pooler by the Riverdale Police Department.
The meeting began with Capt. Duffey reading Pooler her administrative rights, ensuring she understood the obligations of providing truthful responses. The purpose of the interview was to determine whether administrative action was warranted following her arrest. Pooler acknowledged and signed the required documents before giving her account of the events.
Pooler recounted that she had just been released from the hospital when she stopped at a Walmart to buy groceries. As she was leaving, she was approached by store personnel and accused of failing to scan certain items. Despite offering to pay for any unscanned merchandise, law enforcement was called, and she was issued a citation for shoplifting.
During her court appearance, Pooler was represented by a public defender, who negotiated a plea deal reducing the charge from shoplifting to disorderly conduct. She was sentenced to a fine, which she opted to pay through probation. The total amount, including fees, amounted to approximately $900, which she paid within the same month.
When questioned about the amount of unpaid merchandise, Pooler estimated it to be around fifty dollars, which was later confirmed by Capt. Duffey as $53.01. He also inquired whether she had been given an opportunity to rectify the situation at Walmart, to which she responded that she had not.
Capt. Burns further questioned Pooler regarding her condition at the time of the incident. She revealed that she had been administered IV pain medication for gallbladder issues before going to Walmart. Despite this, there was no indication from the investigating officers that her behavior had been influenced by the medication.
Pooler proactively reported the incident to P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training), and she confirmed receiving a notification from them. She stated that she had initially sought guidance from Sergeant Walker on whether to disclose the matter, and upon Walker’s advice, she brought it to the attention of her superiors.
As the interview concluded, Duffey confirmed that Pooler’s guilty plea constituted a violation of College Park Police Department’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). The investigation’s findings would be submitted to the Majors and ultimately reviewed by the Chief of Police for a final decision on potential disciplinary actions.
At precisely 1619 hours, the interview was formally concluded, leaving Pooler awaiting the Chief’s decision regarding her future with the department.
