Former Americus Teacher and Coach Convicted of Child Sexual Exploitation
William Paul Blue spent nearly 15 years working in the Sumter County school system. A parental complaint triggered an investigation that ended in a guilty plea and a lengthy prison sentence.

Former position: Special education teacher and assistant varsity basketball coach, Americus-Sumter High School
Arrest: March 2021
Original charges: 23 counts of sexual exploitation of children and 44 counts of electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor
Conviction: Guilty plea to three sexual exploitation counts
Reported sentence: 40 years total, 12 years to serve, lifetime sex offender registration
Parents raised the alarm
According to WALB, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office began investigating in January 2021 after parents reported possible inappropriate exchanges involving students and a teacher. Investigators examined cellphone and social media information, obtained subpoenas and conducted interviews. Sheriff Eric Bryant confirmed that a victim was 16 years old.
Blue, who had worked for the school district for approximately 14 and a half years, resigned. He surrendered to authorities in March 2021 and originally faced 67 charges. Those initial allegations are distinct from the offenses to which he ultimately pleaded guilty.
Guilty plea and prison sentence
In September 2022, Blue pleaded guilty in Sumter County Superior Court to three counts of sexual exploitation of children. WALB reported a 40-year sentence with 12 years to serve in prison, plus lifetime sex offender registration.
The supplied Georgia Department of Corrections screenshot shows three 20-year sentence entries, an incarceration start date of October 27, 2022, and a maximum possible release date of September 26, 2034. It identifies his status as active when the screenshot was captured. Multiple entries do not necessarily mean consecutive terms, and the original sentencing order is needed to reconcile the correctional record with the reported total sentence.
A question of trust
Blue’s case raises an uncomfortable question for school systems: what safeguards exist when an educator trusted with students is accused of exploiting them? The public reporting establishes that parents brought the concerns to authorities. It does not establish that school officials had prior knowledge of the misconduct.
